When I picked up my son after school, I noticed a big track meet forming. One of my son’s best friends is the star pole vaulter. I always wanted to see him compete.
The five high schools competing were Saguaro High School, Chaparral High School, Arcadia High School (all Scottsdale Unified School District schools), Tempe High School and Dysart High School.
Arizona voters approved a measure about 10 years ago that made the State of Arizona pay for all capital improvements at public schools. Today, the buildings and facilities are excellent as I hope you can tell from these photos. This field has brand new turf and a new irrigation system. The baseball field is also brand new. Saguaro High is getting a makeover with several new buildings being built or planned.
Saguaro High School recently won the Arizona 4A football championship for the first time since 1995. The other high school that covers McCormick Ranch is Chaparral High School which is a perennial powerhouse in football and many other sports.

Perhaps you can tell that Saguaro’s mascot is the Sabercat.

Now over to the pole vaulting pit.

By the time my son’s friend vaulted, the light was long gone… but he did fantastic! His goal was to qualify of the Arizona State High School Track Meet, or “State,” and I’m sure he did. The whole Saguaro track team gathered around to watch him. I’ll have to find out how high he went.
I hadn’t been to a track meet since my sister was a top Arizona high school hurdler in the early 1980’s. The weather was wonderful, it was truly exciting and I had a great time.
